BMW has unveiled a facelifted version of the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible which, as the global rollout gets underway in July, should arrive on Australian shores towards the 3rd quarter of 2017. The update brings with it some cosmetic alternations, some new tech, and revised interior appointments.
To use their own term, this Life-Cycle Impulse (LCI) doesn’t really change too much about the 2 Series we’ve grown used to. Introduced in 2014 as the F22, the range took over from the 1 Series coupe that had previously occupied the same corner of BMW’s stable.
Starting with the exterior changes, the new 2 Series can be differentiated by its larger kidney grilles, all-LED front illuminators, and revised front air intakes. Additionally, a three new paint options join the established palette, including Seaside Blue, Mediterranean Blue, and Sunset Orange.
Under the bonnet, the engines are untouched, with the 220i and 230i being powered by the B48 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder while the M240i and range-topping M2 being powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six turbo.
Inside, all 2 Series variants feature a newer instrument panel that’s more ergonomic to the driver, accented by high-gloss black surfacing on the centre stack and chrome on control panels and doors. There’s also a wider selection of materials and finishes available to be personalised by the owner.
BMW has installed its newest iDrive system with touch support. Every 2 Series utilises an 8.8-inch high resolution display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Though cars specified with the Navigation System Professional do come with their own in-built solution.
ConnectedDrive comes as standard now too that, through a built-in SIM card, enables concierge services, real-time traffic information and route suggestions, and partial remote access via BMW’s smartphone app.
The safety suite has also been expanded with more features no longer exclusive to higher grades. Although, features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Lane Departure Warning come as part of the optional Driving Assistant package.
