We get our first look at the 2018 Holden Commodore Sportwagon today as its European twin, the Opel (or Vauxhall in the UK) Insignia proceeded it slightly with an online reveal. For all intents and purposes, they share identical designs and a very similar spec/trim.

Of course, the most obvious difference being the logo used and the body style designation - while Opel is using the ‘Sports Tourer’ moniker, Holden is extends its use of the Sportwagon name. If you’ve seen the previous leaked photos of the car during a closed filming session, the design here is virtually unchanged.

The general profile cues are also very similar to the liftback saloon, though the longer roofline here is accentuated with a chrome line that runs all the way from the A- to the D-pillar, or arching from the wing mirrors to the tail lamps.

Holden boats that it has 1640-litres of boot space, though with the rear seats upright the figure is a respectable 520-litres, a decent amount more than the incoming sedan, but considerably less in terms of overall volume than the outgoing VF Commodore Sportwagon which offered up to 2000-litres.

That is, perhaps, a price to pay for the newer car’s sleeker silhouette. Loading items will be a little easier too with a standard intelligent tailgate that can be opened with a light kick to the rear of the car, beneath the rear bumper.

Under the bonnet, the new Commodore Sportwagon can be had with a range of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as well as a range-topping naturally aspirated V6 with 230kW and 370Nm with all-wheel drive. All engines will be mated to a new 9-speed automatic transmission.

In addition - and depending on the selected grade - the Commodore can be specified with a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, and the adaptive ‘Flexride’ suspension system. Inside, an 8-inch infotainment system is standard with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
