Mitsubishi has today announced a recall for 74,935 SUVs built over various model years over an issue with corrosion of the tailgate. According to the company, the vehicle affected may have “insufficient corrosion coating” on the end cap on the outer tub of the tailgate gas springs.
Should there be severe corrosion here, the end cap of the tailgate spring may break, which could see an open tailgate fall suddenly, increasing the risk of injury. Mitsubishi is not the only Japanese manufacturer to issue this recall, as there have been similar recalls earlier this year for a broadly similar issue.
The affected cars are the ASX built from 2011-2015, the Challenger from 2012-2014, and the new Pajero Sport, 2016. The VIN numbers for these cars can be viewed here.
Affected owners will be contacted by Mitsubishi Australia via mail, but we advise that owners bring their cars into their nearest dealership to have the offending items replaced free of charge. For more information on the recall, customers can call the Mitsubishi helpline at 1-300-121-211.
