Fresh off the introduction of the “Mk7.5” Golf facelift last week, Volkswagen has now introduced the refreshed pure electric variant of its most successful model. The e-Golf packs all the updates brought about with the range facelift, and also adds a few specific features to electrify potential owners. Pardon the pun.
Headlining change here is to the battery pack. Where the previous e-Golf squeezed in a 24.2kWh battery, the refresh sees an increase in capacity to 35.8kWh. In the real world, that means that the e-Golf can now boast a tested 300km range on a single charge (following New European Driving Cycle testing standards). On top of that, the VW EV can also charge up to 80% capacity in less than an hour via a DC charging station, making it more usable than ever before. Charging time via a household AC socket should be just under six hours.
The electric motor sees a boost as well, with a 15kW jump in power, with the total performance rated at 100kW. With this, the e-Golf can now do the century sprint in just 9.5 seconds, and it’ll top out at 150km/h. Torque is also up too, from 270Nm to 290Nm, making a lot of the power more usable more of the time.
The e-Golf brings the full LED head- and tail-lights from the facelift Golf range with it, along with unique alloy wheels and a pair of faux ‘exhausts’ tacked onto the rear bumper. The EV also gains the Active Info Display as standard, doing away with conventional instrument gauges altogether. It also gets the top-end ‘Discover Pro’ infotainment package, which sees a 9.2-inch screen replete with gesture control taking centre-stage in the dashboard.
The electric e-Golf will carry on with the online services its predecessor came with, like e-Remote (allowing you to control the A/C and charging), ‘Guide & Inform,’ and the App Connect smartphone interface (which features MirrorLink, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay). It will also offer the same safety systems that are now available on the regular Mk7.5 Golf, which include Traffic Jam assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Emergency Assist (which stops the car on its own if the driver loses consciousness).
