Lightning-quick run betters its last record by nearly 20-seconds. Yikes.
The Nio EP9, the 1000kW electric supercar that’s held the title of the fastest EV around the gruelling Nürburgring Nordshleife, has cemented its position as an electric hypercar rocket by posting a new lap time that betters its last scorching run by a scarcely-believable 20-seconds.
In October of last year, the Nio EP9 managed a Nürburgring lap time of 7-minutes 5.12-seconds, which was barely 8-seconds behind Porsche with its 918 Spyder hypercar. Now though, the new lap record of 6-minutes and 45.9-seconds puts it firmly ahead of Stuttgart’s best, and ahead of every other production car out there (and beats itself by 19.22-seconds).
“This is a fabulous achievement for Nio, and I am very proud of the team that has worked tirelessly to achieve this accolade,” said Nio’s head of performance and Formula E team principal, Gerry Hughes. The EP9 and its mega all-wheel drive system has been setting records around the world, taming one iconic circuit at a time.
The Nio EP9 will soon be joined by the ES8, a full-sized 7-seater SUV that will take on the Chinese market later this year. NIO, previously known as NextEV, intends to take the autonomous EV market by storm, proud of its Californian autonomous vehicle testing license and its 2,000-strong workforce. Going back to the EP9, Nio intends to release another batch of 10 hand-built and personalised hypercars going forwards, priced at US$1.48-million (or about $1.96-million).
