Since the debut of the ‘new’ 2017 Nissan GT-R, the more demanding current owners of the R35 Godzilla may have been anticipating a more focused ‘Track Edition’ to rear its head before long.

It’s here now, but curiously Nissan is opting to have its debut in the United States first. The current GT-R, with its facelifted exterior and raft of engine and suspension tweaks, also debuted in America-land at a last year’s New York Motor Show. So shall the Track Edition in 2017.

Prices will start at $127,990 US Dollars (roughly $168k in our money) for the in-between variant, splitting the standard GT-R and the hardcore GT-R NISMO. When it does make its first showroom appearance, customers will be able to choose between four paint options: Jet Black, Super Silver, Pearl White, Blaze Metallic, and Solid Red.

Mechanically, the Track Edition has a bespoke adaptive suspension system developed with Bilstein. Besides this, the entire structure has been made even more rigid with additional welding applied at key stress areas. Adding to this end is the wider and more lightweight anti-roll bar and uprated linkage components to its double wishbone front suspension to improve front-end grip and steering responsiveness.

Visually, there are some NISMO branded fenders that add an even more aggressive look to the car, but black 6-spoked 20-inch forged aluminium wheels are the plainest of all differentiators. They’re shod in special Dunlop Sports Maxx GT600 tyres too that have been tailored to the car’s specific needs.

Inside, there’s much less tan leather surrounding most of the touch points, replaced instead with exposed carbon fibre and a large dose of black leather and red contrast stitching. The colour theme also applies to the seats, a pair of Recaro buckets that actually look pretty comfortable.

In case you were wondering, no, there are no change whatsoever disclosed about the twin-turbo 3.8-litre VR38DETT V6 engine under that bonnet. It still produces a very punchy 420kW and 633Nm. Paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission all-wheel drive, the GT-R Track Edition is still a ruthlessly effective machine on any road.
