A social media hiccup fuels hopes for an even hotter Cayman.
It’s fairly common for dealers and distributors to get a hold of information ahead of the general public, media included. There are dealer events and product briefings that reveal details of products that we’d scramble to get, and though there are almost constant reminders of the privileged nature of the information being imparted to them, sometimes mistakes are made.
On an Instagram post (that has since been deleted), Porsche Brisbane seemed to have confirmed the impending introduction of a Porsche Cayman GT4 RS, a car that has thus far remained nothing more than a hot rumour. The GT4 RS has been speculated to pack a naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine, with 368kW of power and 460Nm of torque. The GT4 RS would also be lightened to give it maximum agility, which would likely make the mid-engined track-monster an absolute gem for keen drivers.
Except… Porsche themselves have not confirmed the existence of a Cayman GT4 RS. AutoExpress UK only went as far as to say that there’s only “talk” of a GT4 RS, though the rumours are supported by the overwhelming success of the Cayman GT4, which took Porsche by surprise. The speculated GT4 RS would likely offer a manual or a PDK double-clutch automatic, or possibly even both.
CarAdvice broke the story and reached out to Porsche Cars Australia for comment, but the response they received echoed the official commentary, denying the existence and availability of the Cayman GT4 RS, which lends to the theory that maybe a social media manager got a little carried away in the hype over a possible GT4 RS.
So did Porsche Brisbane spoil the surprise, or did they just get caught up in the hype? Well, if a Cayman GT4 RS were to appear, it would likely be at next months’ Geneva motor show. So sit tight, and stay glued to CarShowroom.
