Skoda will be bringing a sportier coupe-like SUV to the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show as evidenced by a recent teaser image the Czech automaker revealed that shows a near blank image besides this car’s roofline, belt line, headlamps, and tail lamps - at least when viewed at profile - called the Vision-E.
Looking at the general size of the car and Skoda’s intentions for market penetration, we are likely looking at the emerging signs of a Kodiaq Coupe that furthers Skoda’s newly established design language.
“Within just a few years, ŠKODA’s new design language has already yielded a number of sensational design studies which point towards the future of our brand,” said Karl Neuhold, Head of Exterior Design at ŠKODA. “Our objectives are clearly defined and we are now ready to present the next step.”
Following the debut in concept form in Shanghai, this coupe offshoot from the full-size Kodiaq SUV should see life on the showroom floor starting in late 2018 to early 2019, a schedule that should also coincide with the parallel development of other SUVs from the VW Group, which Skoda also falls under.
As the German automotive giant is diving headlong into the zero emissions and electric car technology, this Skoda will likely launch with a some kind of hybrid powertrain. In the meantime, when the concept is unveiled later this year in Shanghai, Skoda may use the opportunity to showcase Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle platform to underpin one of their products.
Whether or not the production version of this all-new Skoda will also be offered as fully electric vehicle is uncertain but very possible. Given the timeline, though, it may be more financially prudent for Skoda to lean on more established propulsion methods at launch.
