ID family keeps on growing.
Volkswagen’s electric intentions have been very public and equally bold over the past few months, having unveiled three fully-electric concepts under the ‘ID’ banner, starting with the Hatch, the Crozz, and then the Buzz, all greenlit and confirmed for production. With the three body styles, we thought that that would be the end of that, with minor variations of those models able to accommodate most needs. However, Volkswagen feels differently.
According to an image posted by AutoBlog.NL, a slide that appears to come from an internal VW presentation outlines two more models that will be introduced between the ID Cross (has the model been renamed, or was it a typo?) and the ID Buzz, that appear to be market-specific. Sources speculate that the ID Lounge will be a larger, more spacious version of the ID Cross, built to the tastes and standards of the US market (similar to the Volkswagen Atlas). The ID Lounge may even be a seven-seater, and will likely sport a more upright design that the North American market typically responds to.
The second car is the main focus though. We’ve heard very little chatter about the model that VW is calling the ‘AEROe,’ though what we have heard is that it’ll be a rakish lift back-style car that may take on either a shooting brake or four-door coupe style, and appears to be exclusive to the US and Chinese markets (like the ID Lounge). Regardless what form it takes, the AEROe will be built atop the MEB modular electric-vehicle platform that sits beneath all of VW’s ID cars, and will likely provide a driving range of up to 600km.
Volkswagen has already made public its plans to take the EV market by storm, with 1-million units sold annually planned for 2025. While it’s still early days, the sheer might of Volkswagen and the bigger VW Group means that it’s entirely possible for them to achieve this goal with simple, practical, and affordable EV offerings that can appeal to the heart and mind equally. And with European countries like France looking to ban sales of internal-combustion cars by 2040, Volkswagen’s ID cars couldn’t be better timed.
