New versions of the Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) GS and GT models will be powered by a supercharged version of the 5.0-litre V8 engine fitted to the Mustang in North America.
With substantial local development funded to the tune of $40 million by Prodrive (the British company which owns FPV), two versions of the new engine will be available – delivering 315kW and 335kW of power.
Based on the ‘Coyote’ Ford V8, FPV’s first supercharged engine is light and compact – 47kgs lighter than the current 5.4-litre ‘Boss’ V8 – allowing significant chassis packaging and weight distribution advantages. It’s an all-aluminium design with double overhead camshafts and four vales per cylinder.
American sourced components are shipped to FPV’s Melbourne base and each engine is hand-built by FPV combining the American parts with locally-produced supercharger hardware developed by Harrop Engineering using Eaton technology. The result is a sophisticated high performance engine which complies with Euro Iv emission standards.
For the GS model, the engine delivers 315kW at 5750 rpm and 545Nm from 2000 rpm. GT versions get more – 335kW at 5750 rpm and 570Nm from 2200 rpm. Fuel consumption is as low as 13.5l/100kms.
“The new supercharged V8 engine program represents FPV’s biggest-ever investment in the Australian market, and has been the most extensive and exhaustive development program we’ve ever undertaken,” revealed Bryan Mears, Managing Director of Prodrive Asia-Pacific.
