Things are heating up already in the compact SUV segment with Nissan launching a revised X-TRAIL lineup sharply priced from $27,990 ‘Driveaway’ for the all-new two-wheel-drive (2WD) ST model (introductory special).

The 2WD range is sure to boost sales of the X-TRAIL which is already one of Australia’s favourite compact SUVs. In fact if you combine sales of the X-TRAIL and the British-sourced Dualis, Nissan accounts for over 14 per cent of sales in this highly-competitive segment.

Nissan Dualis and the new 2WD X-TRAIL share Nissan’s trusty 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 102kW/198Nm and returning fuel consumption as low as 8.4l/100kms. Entry-level X-TRAIL 2WD ST models drive the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission, while the up-spec ST-L 2WD variant is only available with the CVT.

Coinciding with introduction of the 2WD models, Nissan had made some changes to the 2.5-litre 4WD X-TRAIL lineup. ST models go up in price by $500 ($32,490 for the manual and $34,990 for the auto) but gain the 17-inch alloy wheels from the ST-L and TS models and leather trim for the steering wheel amongst some extras.

The full 2011 Nissan X-TRAIL range is:

ST 2WD CVT $30,990
