Jeep has broadened the range of its outstanding Grand Cherokee lineup with the introduction of a 3.0-litre, V6 turbo-diesel engine. The Italian-sourced turbo-diesel joins the V6 and V8 petrol engines in the Jeep Grand Cherokee team.

In the entry-level Laredo model, the diesel engine carries a $5,000 premium over the 3.6-litre V6, but in Limited, Limited 70th and Overland variants the diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee is priced the same as the petrol V8.

Reflecting Jeep’s ownership by FIAT, the V6 turbo-diesel engine is a modern, high pressure direct injection design, developed by Fiat and manufactured in Italy by VM Motori. It’s a 60-degree V6 with a compressed graphite iron block and aluminium heads.

Maximum power is 177kW at 4000rpm and peak torque of 550Nm is available between 1800rpm and 2800rpm.

Fuel consumption and emissions are considerable less than Jeep’s previous diesel – rated at 8.3l/100kms (combined cycle) and 218g/km
