The NSW Hunter Valley, two hours drive north of Sydney and best known as a wine production and tasting location, will be the scene for the public debut of Holden’s range-extender electric sedan the Volt.

Well, not quite.

In fact the Hunter Valley EV (Electric Vehicle) Festival on Saturday, 18 August will be held nearby at Foreshore Park in Newcastle from 10am – 4pm.

And at that location, eagle-eyed camera bugs might be able to snap a curious photo with the electric-powered Holden Volt in the foreground and a massive coal-carrying ship in the background as the Port of Newcastle is one of Australia’s largest coal-loading locations. Bit of a contrast in usage of natural resources there!

When launched, Holden Volt will offer a pure electric range of up to 87kms and a total distance range of over 600kms for its combination of electric motor and petrol-driven generator engine.

And Holden has made common sense of two ‘unknowns’ about electric vehicle ownership. Firstly you simply plug your Holden Volt into a household power socket to re-charge the battery and secondly, in terms of power bills, each full re-charge from empty to full will cost you less than a cup of coffee.
