Interesting news from North America overnight where GM responded to media speculation that Holden may cease after Australian manufacturing ends in 2017. “No. Holden is here to stay,” came the quick official response.
Further there was speculation GM’s products in Australia would become Chevrolet-branded but that too has been hosed-down.
Now the North American automotive scribes are wondering about those future Holden products.
GM’s upcoming Zeta II platform seems ideal for an Australian market car to replace the Commodore.
And with excess capacity at its North American plants, rumblings in Detroit suggest building right-hand drive vehicles for Australia would be the obvious answer.
At least Holden is in the news with the motoring media in North America – despite the momentous decision to end local manufacturing, the Australian offshoot didn’t rate a mention in outgoing GM Chairman Dan Akerson’s speech to the National Press Club in Washington D.C. on Monday.
