BMW has launched the fifth generation of its storming M5 sedan supercar with a 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine replacing the previous model’s atmo V10.

Priced at $230,000, the all-new twin-turbo V8 BMW M5 smashes the V10 with 10 per cent more power (412kW) and 30 per cent more torque (680Nm).

Drive is via a new seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with ‘Drivelogic’ for low speed ease and a new Active M differential. On the chassis front, two M Drive buttons allow the driver to adjust handling.

BMW says the all-new M5’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 is its most potent production car engine. With its stonking 680Nm of torque delivered from as low as 1500rpm, the all-new M5 sprints from zero to 100km/h in just 4.3 seconds – aided by standard Launch Control. Fuel consumption is rated at 9.9l/100kms and exhaust C02 emissions at 232g/km.

The high-revving V8 is a screamer – 412kW delivered between 6000 and 7000rpm. It’s a 90-degree V8 with the two turbochargers and catalytic converter housed between the cylinder blocks.

Power-to-weight is particularly impressive at 4.5kg per kw.

The M-developed chassis has been honed by Nurburgring track testing as has the M Servotronic power steering which offers three driver-select levels of assistance.

Typically BMW M Sport, exterior styling enhancements are subtle but effective. Black slats in the grille, three air intakes and air channeling flaps at the lower edges account for the front and there’s the usual ‘power bulge’ in the bonnet plus LED headlights and DRLs.

Flared wheel arches and lowered M Sport suspension highlight the massive 20-inch, twin-spoke alloy wheels and there are side skirts and chrome front fender air vents.

The rear is highlighted by a bootlid ‘Gurney Flap’ and under-bumper air diffuser.

Inside, the all-new BMW M5 runs M Sport seats in Full Merino leather, Aluminium Trace trim strips and a 10.2-inch colour Control Display. Black panel gauges get white illumination.

Of course technology is in abundance and includes Surround View cameras, Park Distance Control and a 16-speaker, 600-watt Dolby sound system.

We can’t wait until the all-new BMW M5 graces the Car Showroom garage for a week.
