2017 Mazda CX-5 Enters Production

When the original CX-5 first rolled out of the factory in 2011, it was touted as a turning point for Mazda. 1.57 million crossover-SUVs later, and the second-generation CX-5 has begun production, almost exactly 5 years to the date of the original production commencement.

The first new CX-5 rolled off the line at Mazda’s Ujina Plant No. 2, fairly close to the company’s headquarters in Hiroshima. The production has begun well-ahead of the intended Japanese market introduction in February, and is likely being built in anticipation of huge sales. After all, the original CX-5 makes up a quarter of Mazda’s global sales.

The 2017 CX-5 features the latest iteration of Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language, featuring a more raked profile and sharper lines. The interior is where the most revisions have taken place, where it now bears goodies like a floating central screen, a windscreen head-up display, and improved material quality all round. Engines are expected to be largely carried over from the existing model, including a 2.2-litre turbodiesel that promises “hybrid-levels of efficiency.”
