The Volkswagen Golf R will get a more varied range thanks to the inclusion of the Wagon body style to sit alongside the hatch at the top of the fast all-wheel drive Golf range. The cargo-friendlier body style is due to arrive after the local August debut of the facelifted Mk7.5 Golf R and limited edition Wolfsburg Edition in August.

As it did before, the Golf R range will start at $52,990 (before OTR) for 5-door hatch with a manual transmission while the incoming auto-only Wagon will enter the fray priced at $5,000 more at $57,990. Splitting the difference is the R hatch equipped with the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch at $55,490.

A 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI four-cylinder petrol engine lives under the bonnet of the wagon and hatch, producing an identical 213kW and 380Nm. It’s a similar motor to the outgoing car, but further optimisation ups power by 7kW. Seeing as now the Mk7 took roughly 5.1 seconds to sprint to 100km/h, this newer model should either be similarly accelerative or a little quicker.

Inside, there’s a new 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system as well as a 12.3-inch Active Info Display that takes up the space once occupied by an analogue instrument cluster. Naturally, there’s leather upholstery, heated seats, and dual-zone climate control, and all the usual luxuries. Except, that is, for a sunroof, which is an additional $1,900.

Standard, though, is autonomous emergency braking, a reversing camera, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, front and rear parking sensors, and seven airbags. More safety kit can be optioned by selecting the $1,300 Driver Assistance Package, which adds adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane keep assist.

Then, there’s the new Wolfsburg Edition, which will be available upon the August launch and limited to 300 units each for both the hatch and Wagon. Examples will wear a set of19-inch Pretoria alloys, have unique paint options and carbon fibre mirror caps as well as feature a Nappa leather interior, upgraded sound system, and the Driver Assistance Pack thrown in.
