The future of the Q3 is electrifying.

The Audi Q3, one of Ingolstadt’s most popular offerings in recent years, is getting a little long in the tooth. As such, discussion and speculation is strife with regards to its replacement, with the second-generation Q3 slated for introduction in 2018.

Detailed by an AutoExpress report, the new Q3 will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB modular platform, an architecture that is already seeing use underneath the Audi A3 and the Volkswagen Tiguan. As such, the new Q3 is expected to be larger, more commodious, more practical, and lighter than the current car. The new underpinnings will also free up space for green propulsion technology, like a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or fully electric drivetrain.

An electric (or EV) Q3 would likely share quite a lot of components and technology with the upcoming Volkswagen e-Golf, benefitting from the new VW EV’s claimed battery range of roughly 300km on a full charge. And while the Q3 will grow marginally, its dimensions shouldn’t change too much over the current model. However, the interior will see massive revisions, which should aid practicality and outright space.

The interior design will also be brought in line with the rest of the modern Audi lineup, with the technology first seen in the A3, A4, Q5, and Q7. This should include things like Audi’s brilliant ‘Virtual Cockpit’ digital driver’s display, and the very latest iteration of Audi’s MMI infotainment interface, replete with smartphone mirroring tech.
