One special-edition too far, we think.

2018 Fiat 500 Urbana Edition – NYIAS

Usually when a much-loved car gets into the later-stages of its life, manufacturers will roll out either an extensive facelift or a commemorative special edition, which usually spurs sales on a little bit, before killing the car off. If you recall, that’s what Volkswagen Australia did when we sent off the Beetle back in 2016, where we got a ‘Final Edition.’

But where the Beetle is, arguably, still a rather new car, the Fiat 500… isn’t. It’s been around since 2007 would you believe it, and for its 11th year on sale, it’s received a new ‘Urbana’ special edition that is an unashamed attempt to flog a dead horse.

The Urbana model, limited to the American market, dresses up the little turbocharged Italian microcar with unique paint finishes, smoked lights on either end, and rather pretty “hyper-black” aluminium alloys, measuring 16-inches in diameter and feature ‘Urbana Edition’ elements. Which is nice.

Inside, you’ll find ‘Sport Cloth’ upholstery with contrast silver stitching, as well as a black background for the instrumentation. How exciting.

Motivation still comes from an unfettled 100kW/203Nm turbocharged four-cylinder 1.4-litre petrol mill, which can normally be paired to either a six-speed auto or a five-speed manual. Fiat did not declare which transmission would be offered with the Urbana.
