But will it make it here?
While we’ve all been happily enjoying Jeep’s latest Wrangler, it appears that it has other things for the near-future in the works too. The Cherokee, known best for its rather odd face, is facing a refresh next year, and the Michigan-based firm has alot more in store for it than just a new set of headlights.
The Wrangler may have been the first to receive a new 2.0-litre mild-hybrid powertrain, but it certainly won’t be the only one to benefit from the new mill. Reports suggest that the Cherokee will be the next recipient of that engine, replete with its eTorque system, which will feature alongside the existing 2.4-litre atmo 4-pot as well as the larger 3.2-litre V6, though interestingly, the blown unit puts out more power than both (and some 76Nm more than the V6).
The power outputs mean that if Jeep offers the engines based on output, the turbo-4 will likely sit as a flagship motor, thanks to its 201kW and 400Nm. There’s no present indication of what gearbox it’ll utilise, but Jeep does presently have a myriad of torque-converter automatics at its disposal, with a nine-speed jobbie doing duty in the present-day Cherokee.
There is one small caveat though: The turbocharged petrol mill for the Wrangler is presently offered exclusively for the North American market, though perhaps it’ll reach foreign shores in the Cherokee. We certainly hope so.
