The new Discovery will arrive in our market with both 5- and 7-seat options on all but the First Edition (7-seater exclusively), along with semi-autonomous driving capabilities and a “premium” interior. The Ingenium engine range on offer is exclusively diesel, ranging from the Td4 (132kW) up to the Sd4 (177kW), before rising to the Td6 (190kW), all paired up to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels.
The Disco can be specified in as many as 17 different colour finishes, with 6 of those listed as a premium, with another 10 as metallic; Only solid ‘Fuji White’ comes as a no-cost option.
The sheer size of the Disco means that while you could fit up to seven people in comfort, you could also carry up to 2406L of cargo with all the seats folded flat. Those seven seats can be folded remotely with ‘Intelligent Seat Fold’ technology, which allows you to utilise the Land Rover connected application to control all the seats individually. The 21st-century concessions don’t stop there, as the Disco also offers a WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices (internet plan not included), along with up to 9 USB ports, as well as six 12-volt charging points.
While plenty of kit comes as standard on the Discovery, unlocking the cars’ full potential will require a degree of financial generosity, as a lot of the headlining features on the very latest Disco are optional extras. Even the snazzy LED headlights are an option, with halogens coming as standard, while full-adaptive units require a step up (even in HSE Luxury trim). Even the company’s fabled Terrain Response system is not available on ’S’ models.
What’s immediately obvious to even the most casual observer is that the new Disco brings with it a radically different design language, adopting styling cues from the rest of the Land Rover and Range Rover family. With slim lights on either end and very pared-back surfacing, the styling simplicity also incorporates known Discovery trademarks, like the stepped roofline, offset rear numberplate and upright proportions (look at that face and say it isn’t an air dam).
“Design creates an emotional connection between our customers and our vehicles. Our clear design strategy means our vehicles are instantly recognisable and communicate the values of Land Rover that our customers love. New Discovery’s flawless volume and proportions, sophisticated surfaces and precise detailing beautifully combine with engineering integrity to create a premium SUV that will resonate with today’s customers.” – Jerry McGovern, Design, Land Rover
