Volkswagen really needs to learn how to keep their cars under wraps.
After the update to the Volkswagen Golf, the natural next step for the German automaker would be to update its sister car, the booted Volkswagen Jetta. The Jetta has, for the longest time, served as a strong seller in many of Volkswagen’s critical markets, and if the photos seen here are any indication, it will continue to do well for some time yet.
The photos seen here were brought to you by Autologia, a Mexican publication that has since pulled the photos and the related article down, further lending credence that the vehicle in the photos is the real deal. The photographs appear to depict the car in the premises of Volkswagen’s factory in Puebla, Mexico.
If the images are anything to go by, the next-generation Jetta will gain a squarer, more mature design language than the outgoing car, bearing plenty of design touches that have trickled own from the very latest Passat and Arteon. The new-generation Jetta also shows that it’s gained a degree of sportiness in its profile, and a little more athleticism than the stoic car it’ll replace. The headlights now carry complex internal graphics, that are connected directly to a wider new grille and more intricate surfacing beneath. The profile of the car isn’t particularly noteworthy sans the obvious increase in length, while the rear bears design hints from the latest crop of Skodas.
Beneath the fresh new exterior sits the MQB modular platform that is set to be the spine of all new Volkswagens. The Jetta should then lose weight and enjoy greater agility over the outgoing car, which still shares its bones with the sixth-generation Golf hatch. Motivation should come from a range of turbocharged engines ranging between 1.5-litres to 2.0-litres in size, with the latter engine likely to be kept exclusive to higher-end performance-oriented variants.
The Jetta, in North America, does battle with cars like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, and is considered to be relatively low-rent as opposed to the plush, semi-premium German posh-mobile that we expect from Volkswagen (ditto the Europeans). It’ll likely debut there with the same raft of advanced technology packed into the Volkswagen Golf ‘Mk7.5’ without anything groundbreaking.
