BMW’s flagship luxury limousine, the 7-Series, is set to receive a mid-life update very soon, if the spotting of camouflaged test cars are any indication. As is the way with BMW, the aesthetic changes are likely to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but it ought to pick up on some of the newer design traits that have debut on Munich’s very latest cars.
Images that have surfaced of camo-ed 7ers running around have revealed minor changes that make big differences. The face of the 7 will receive slimmer headlights and a more prominent grille, as per what we’ve seen with the BMW X7 SUV and the 8-Series super-coupe. The larger nose and slimmer lights will be framed by a reprofiled bumper for sure, while the rear is set to gain a more prominent L-shaped signature as well as a new bumper there too.
Aesthetic changes aside, the new 7er is set to gain a whole heap of tech. Since the 7 debuted some 3-years ago, BMW’s started rolling out more advanced driver assistance and convenience technology, which is expected to carry into the big limousine. A brand-new iDrive system is expected to feature, replete with a totally-customisable digital instrument cluster.
In addition to the new iDrive, the 2019 7-Series is also expected to offer more options for prospective buyers, which will undoubtedly go a long way in appealing to its target audience.
And while the 7-Series generally benefits from a range of strong, smooth, efficient engines, it seems that the top-fight 4.4-litre V8 mill will be revised thoroughly to fall in line with the options offered with the 8-Series. As such, improved outputs of 390kW and 750Nm are expected, though the same 8-speed ZF transmission will be retained and put to good use.
The BMW 7-Series has long been considered one of the old guard in the limousine class, alongside the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. However, with newer rivals like the Audi A8 and Lexus LS on the market presenting themselves stronger than ever before, the 7-Series will benefit greatly from this well-timed update, and we’ve no doubt that the 7er will continue to sell healthily and convincingly for years to come.
