Sharply-styled crossover now gets a sharply-priced variant.

2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross ES

Mitsubishi’s on a bit of a roll today, after having first announced the arrival of the ASX ES for the 2019 model year, they’re now talking about a new Eclipse Cross ES too. Lowering the cost of entry into the Eclipse Cross range, the new entry-level ES variant offers great bang for your buck in every sense, throwing in all the kit needed to still be a compelling family machine.

“The Eclipse Cross ES makes a very desirable package with Mitsubishi’s eye-catching styling combined with the latest in vehicle audio and infotainment systems, sophisticated interior design and advanced safety. The Eclipse Cross ES is the perfect choice for discerning customers who don’t want to compromise on style or driving dynamics.” — John Signoriello, CEO, Mitubishi Motors Australia

Where it matters, Mitsubishi hasn’t skimped: Under the bonnet, there is still a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-banger with 110kW and 250Nm, with power sent to the front wheels via a CVT automatic, with a Sport mode and paddle shifters that try to trick you into thinking it has actual gears.

While a turbocharged petrol engine is all well and good, there are other considerations to be made when choosing a family SUV, and the Eclipse Cross ES has you covered. There’s forward collision warning and LED daytime running lights as standard, as well as 7-airbags, hill-hold assist and automatic high-beams. Step inside and you’ll ding niceties like smartphone mirrorlink, 6-speakers, and a reversing camera.

And if you’ve assumed that the base-level model for just $29,990 won’t look the part, you’re a little off the mark: The Eclipse Cross ES still gets 18-inch polished alloy wheels, and even a roof spoiler to boot. And front fog lights, too.
