French carmaker Peugeot are set to unveil the latest-iteration of its 2008 crossover late next year, underpinned by a new platform that’ll also offer a huge variety of powertrain options wrapped up in upgraded aesthetics & build quality. The 2008 will be the first compact crossover to be built on the Compact Modular Platform (CMP), but the first new CMP car will be the 208 hatchback.

The 2008 is scheduled to make its debut in September 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, where it’s expected to turn quite a number of heads. For starters, the 2008 will bear the new design traits that were first seen on the 3008 & 5008 SUVs, and then improved upon by the 508 fastback.

Beneath the skin will be that CMP platform, and the car will not only be larger, but lighter too. That new platform will mean that the ’20 2008 crossover will be able to offer some of the newest tech from the PSA Groupe portfolio. Those technologies will be presented in a majorly-upgraded cabin integrating Peugeot’s iCockpit design language, which together with the evocative exterior, will help the 2008 target the ‘upper end of mainstream’ market.

Another benefit of the CMP platform will be the available powertrains: At launch, the next-generation 2008 be motivated by some evolutionary-interpretations of the PureTech petrol & BlueHDi diesel engines, with an eight-speed automatic gearbox set to be offered on the poshest variants. CMP only allows for front-wheel drive though, which is a little unfortunate.

It won’t stop there, of course. Later, there’ll be a mild-hybrid powertrain (which AutoExpress reckons will roll-around in time for the 2008’s facelift), as well as a full-electric version of the 2008 that’ll battle the Hyundai Kona Electric. This is in line with what Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Imparato has said in the past, that different buyers will want different powertrains in their cars and Peugeot will strive to answer all needs.
