At the start of this year, we showed you the GV80, which is Genesis’s first-ever SUV and the latest player in luxury SUV game. The SUV had a distinctive look to it while being restraint as well, which we liked. The SUV’s design language was based on that of the incoming G80, which we see here today.
Genesis describes the styling of the all-new midsize luxury G80 as “Athletic Elegance” and features design cues such as the Crest Grille up front and double-lined Quadlamps at both ends, exactly as we’ve seen on the GV80.
“A relationship begins at first sight. The distinctive “two lines” signature of the Quadlamps presents a clear and unique Genesis identity within seconds,” said Sang Yup Lee, Senior Vice President, Head of Genesis Design. “No matter what body type, sedan or SUV, the Quadlamps and Athletic Elegance design language present a distinctive brand identity, and this will enable Genesis to offer a fresh alternative within the existing luxury space.”
Just looking at the silhouette of the G80, its four-door coupe design is very much an evolution of the previous generation’s design. Furthermore, the G80 will be battling for market share in one of the most competitive car segment markets, facing the likes of BMW’s 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class and Audi’s A6. Now, while those three are lookers in their own right, the G80’s design flair adds a dimension of flavour to the selection.
As we’ve seen on the GV80, the interior is definitely a sight to behold. If you’re like this author and appreciates that less is more, then this G80 suddenly makes sense. The same minimalist theme as the SUV is carried over to the saloon along with the 14.5-inch ultra-wide ratio infotainment screen and interior trim such as the dashboard, centre console, steering wheel and door panels.

"We question the status quo. Technology should not dominate and only present itself when necessary. This is the new luxury experience our Genesis customers expect in today’s high-end user experience.”
Genesis has been keeping mum on the details of the G80 including which powertrains we are likely to receive. The luxury saloon is likely offered with a choice of either a 2.5-litre turbo four-cylinder with 207kW and 422Nm, a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 or a straight-six diesel lump with 207kW and 588Nm. These engines are likely to be paired up with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
However, it isn’t clear at the current time which specs or engines Australia will receive but we do know that more details will be released after its Korean-market launch in March and that its Australian debut is slated for the second half of 2020.
