Mitsubishi has simplified the range of its tough-as-nails Challenger full-size SUV – the updated Model Year 2014 lineup launched today is exclusively four-wheel-drive (4WD).
Recognizing buyers of the Triton-based Challenger are passionate off-roaders, Mitsubishi has dispensed with the entry-level rear-wheel-drive versions (which started at $36,990) and now the 4WD Challenger range starts at $42,490.
Also included in the five-seat Mitsubishi Challenger’s MY14 update are enhanced looks inside and out and some extra features.
No changes under the bonnet with the Challenger exclusively powered by Mitsubishi’s grunty 2.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel good for 131kW of power at 4000rpm and peak torque of 400Nm at 2000rpm (five-speed manual) or 350Nm at 1800rpm (five-speed automatic).
Drive is via Mitsubishi’s All Terrain Technology (lockable rear and centre differentials) and Super Select 4WD (rear 2WD, full-time 4WD High, high-range and low-range 4WD – which can be swapped at speeds up to 100km/h).
Styling changes are minor – new front grille and bumper and revised rear lights.
Inside, the MY2014 Mitsubishi Challenger is identified by its new-look back fabric for the seats, a new design for the centre stack to accommodate new generation touch-screen entertainment systems and trim accents in carbon look.
Range-topping Mitsubishi Challenger LS gains 17-inch alloy wheels and a larger seven-inch colour touchscreen audio system now with satellite navigation (including 3D maps) and an extra couple of speakers.
The new Mitsubishi Challenger lineup is:
4WD Manual $42,490
4WD Automatic $44,990
4WD LS Automatic $49,990
