The continuing collaboration between BMW Australia and Victoria Police has most recently resulted in the all-new M5 Competition joining the state’s Highway Patrol fleet, which was recently unveiled with its special livery applied and roof-mounted flashers fitted.

“Since co-operating in the deployment of BMW 5 Series patrol vehicles in 2018, BMW Group Australia has enjoyed working closely with Victoria Police,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Vikram Pawah.

This follows the rollout of multiple units of the 5 Series, the 530d, into the VIC police vehicle lineup. Unsurprisingly, officers have been impressed with its breadth of abilities, combining class-leading handling, performance as well as comfort and fuel economy.

With the addition of the M5 Competition, the fleet is now looking decidedly Bavarian-leaning - and that’s no bad thing in our books. The car certainly has all the criteria for a Highway Patrol vehicle down pat and perhaps well into the realm of overkill.

With its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 460kW and 750Nm, there’s more than enough on tap to strong-arm nearly any misbehaving driver to the curb. Add to that the fact that this is the first M5 with all-wheel drive and it suddenly doesn’t matter if the weather isn’t ideal, the car M xDrive system will keep on gripping the road.

“With the incredible BMW M5 Competition entering Victoria Police service, the performance level has jumped up the scale. When combined with the safety of the xDrive four-wheel drive system, the M5’s all-round ability aspects makes it a natural fit for dynamic police duties,” added Pawah.
