The storm isn’t over yet for Japanese airbag manufacturer Takata, with the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) announcing today a further recall encompassing several Toyota models manufactured during the tail end of the last decade.
According to the ACCC notice, the recall will see Corollas built between December 2006 and December 2009, the compact Yaris built from January 2009 to December 2011, and the larger Avensis Verso MPV built from June to December 2009 have their inflators replaced at no cost to their owners.
The notice further explains that the front passenger airbag inflator may rupture in event of an accident, if exposed to high humidity or fluctuating temperatures. This, the report says, dramatically increases the risk of injury to the passengers.
With the 179,710 cars affected in this latest recall order, the total number of cars affected in Australia over multiple marques will now push into 7-figures. These recalls are not limited to Toyota alone though, with other global manufacturers like BMW, Ford, Honda, Mitsubishi, Fiat, and Nissan also affected. Internationally, the total number of affected airbag inflators now floats at an estimated 100 million units, since 2008.
The ACCC advises owners of the affected Toyotas to get in touch with their local dealers to schedule a free-of-charge replacement of the faulty inflators at the soonest possible convenience.
