Entry to the BMW X6 lineup is the XDrive30d priced at $110,900 and the range-topper remains the stunning X6 M stickered at $190,900. Standard seating specification is now five seats.

But the talking point is the Australian debut of the German brand’s new class of M Performance vehicles headlined by the rip-snorting X6 M50d with two small high-pressure turbochargers working in harmony with a larger low-pressure unit to deliver 740Nm of torque from as low as 1500rpm to 3000rpm. Maximum power is 280kW and this is delivered between 4000rpm and 4500rpm – he redline is 5400rpm.

Drive is via an M-specification close-ratio eight-speed Sports automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle-shifters for manual changes. Zero to 100km/h takes just 5.3 seconds – faster than many V8s – yet combined cycle fuel consumption is just 7.7l/100kms.

Underneath are stronger body mounts and air suspension with automatic self-levelling and 20-inch M light alloy wheels.

Naturally there is full range of BMW M exterior and interior enhancements including Anthracite roof liner and Alcantara/Nappa leather M steering wheel.

There are also new wheels and new colours inside and out – including startling new leathers in Vermilion Red and Ivory White (as well as the traditional black).
