The 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon will be held January, actually preceding the Detroit Motor Show, and unlike some more formal events, it’s a playground for automakers and aftermarket brands to showcase their latest and greatest.

Mazda has thought about how to make an impression on customers while also building hype around its newest SUV, the second-generation CX-5 while cleverly masking the possibility of not really having an actual new car to wheel out.

They’ve solved this by tarting up their all-new CX-5 with a very fetching exterior treatment called the ‘Custom Style’ package and they’ve even thrown in the CX-3 into the mix, lavishing the sporty touches onto it as well.

Both cars are finished in a gunmetal grey paint finish similar to that shown on the Mazda MX-5 RF, though it’s unclear whether this is the same ‘Machine Grey’ seen the roadster. In addition to that, there’s also the lowered stance thanks to the body kit and around back there are twin exhausts tips that sit below a chrome strip that’s also present on the side skirts and front splitter.

There are no powertrain information on these two unique Mazda creations, so we’ll assume they’re untouched. However, the CX-5 does get height-adjustable suspension and also gains new 20-inch wheels shod in 245/45R20 tyres

As for how likely they are to be sold as an upgrade to showroom cars, it certainly wouldn’t take too much effort to offer it if they omit the trick suspension and focus on the admittedly tasteful exterior pack.

Come on, Mazda.
