Mazda’s all-new flagship SUV, the CX-9 had just arrived on Australian shores with its showroom arrival due in the coming weeks. Prior to customers here getting hold of their own cars, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has put it through its crash tests with the big Mazda taking a full 5-star safety rating.

Out of a maximum Overall Score of 37 points, the CX-9 scored an impressive 35.87 with it scoring a 14.87 in the Frontal Offset Test (out of a maximum of 16 points) and a full 16 out of 16 in the Side Impact Test.

Other metrics released by the independent vehicle safety watchdog are just as positive with the SUV found to have good protection from whiplash as well as being friendly in pedestrian impacts.

According to James Goodwin, ANCAP’s CEO: “For a large, heavy vehicle, it performed extremely well in each of the destructive tests and comfortably achieved a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. Safety is an important consideration for buyers in this class as this model is likely to be used to transport children and other family members.”

“CX-9 buyers have previously gone without a rating so we have filled this gap with safety savvy consumers now able to enter the showroom with confidence knowing all new variants offer the top level of safety,” added Mr Goodwin.

The previous generation Mazda CX-9 had not been tested by ANCAP, although foreign safety tests reveal it likely would have performed admirably.

In the range-topping Azami spec, the CX-9 also gains Adaptive LED Headlamps (ALH), which incorporates High Beam Control (HBC), Driver Attention Alert (DAA), Lane Keep-assist System (LAS), Smart Brake Support (SBS), Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) Lane Departure warning (LDW) and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with stop and go function.
