Aston Martin has just revealed further details of its latest in-house engine. The mill in question is slated for service in the upcoming Valhalla, which was originally called the AM-RB 003. The Valhalla is a result of the collaboration between Red Bull Racing, F1 engineer Adrian Newey and Aston Martin. Production is slated for late 2021 and limited to 500 units.
The Valhalla was intended to sit below their latest track beast, the Valkyrie, which utilises much of the technology seen in that flagship. As such, you will not find a V12 here but rather a turbo V6 that’s paired up to “a new range of hybrid systems” being developed alongside it, including possible hybrid and plug-in options.
But back to that blown sixer. Codenamed the TM01, the mid-mounted 3.0-litre V6 is claimed to be one of the most power engines in Aston’s range. However, Gaydon is keeping mum on the figures and will only reveal them closer to launch.
The V6 engine will be a configured as a ‘hot Vee’ whereby the twin-turbochargers live in the valley between the banks of cylinders. This is because it shortens the charge pipe’s distance for better throttle response, hence the top-exit exhaust pipes. The mill will also feature dry-sump lubrication which helps lower the centre of gravity of the 200kg engine while also delivering good lubrication performance during on-limit, high-speed cornering.
On the other hand, while this engine was designed to deliver the highest levels of performance, it was also designed to meet all future emission requirements for Euro 7.
Aston Martin President and Group CEO, Andy Palmer said about this engine: “Investing in your own powertrains is a tall order, but our team have risen to the challenge. Moving forward, this power unit will be integral to a lot of what we do and the first signs of what this engine will achieve are incredibly promising.”
The twin-turbo V6 is also set to be employed in future models including the 2023 Vanquish and probably even a future electrified variant of the DBX SUV. Who knows? What we do know is that the Valhalla will star in the upcoming James Bond film, No Time To Die.
