Audi has unveiled a wonderful new 1.8-litre petrol engine with turbocharging and FSI direct injection combining to deliver 125kW/320Nm of performance and fuel consumption as low as 5.7l/100kms.
The new 1.8 TFSI engine is slated for Australian debut early next year in the Audi A5 Sportback.
With its optimized fuel consumption (reduced by 21 per cent) and exhaust emissions, Audi’s new 1.8 TFSI powerplant already meets the tough requirements of the upcoming Euro 6 standards which do not become mandatory until 2015.
Audi says with a manual transmission, the new 1.8 TFSI equipped A5 Sportback can sprint from zero to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
The new Audi 1.8 TFSI is 3.5kgs lighter than its predecessor thanks to measures like alloy pistons and even screws made from aluminium instead of steel.
Rail pressure of the FSI injection system has been raised to 200bar and, at medium engine speeds, the fuel is injected indirectly at the end of the intake manifold near the tumble valves - where air provides intensive swirling. Audi says the indirect injection system reduces emissions and fuel consumption.
Thermal management has also been a major focus and the new Audi 1.8 TFSI runs a fully electronic coolant regulation system which is separate from the interior heating system. One of the primary objectives is to get engine oil to operating temperature as quickly as possible and as a result, in cold weather it can be some time before the main radiator comes into operation.
And the turbocharger itself is a new design with the turbine wheel made from a new alloy which can withstand temperatures up to 980 degrees and systematic pressure build up to 1.3 bar.
