Audi Australia has introduced the wagon version of its popular premium exec saloon, the A4, split into two versions starting at $63,900.
Audi Australia has introduced the all-new A4 Avant to join the sedan variant of the small premium saloon. They’re quite hopeful about the new B9-generation A4, too, and the Avant in particular, hinting at its potential to sell around twice as much as the previous model.
During the launch, Audi spoke about its plan to take the fight to its other German rivals BMW with their 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz with their C-Class in the premium executive space, and how the new A4 is integral to their assault.
Coming in two tiers, the A4 Avant will be offered either as a 2.0 TFSI sport ($63,900) or 2.0 TFSI quattro sport ($72,900). Both cars use the same turbocharged 2.0-litre EA888 petrol engine in two states of tune, mated to the Audi’s seven-speed S Tronic dual clutch transmission - Audi has elected to drop its diesel offering for the A4 entirely.
In the base A4 Avant, power figures are 140kW and 320Nm of torque, allowing a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.5 seconds and an claimed average combined fuel consumption figure of 5.6-litres/100km (using Atkinson combustion cycle).
The upper-tier all-wheel drive 2.0TFSI quattro sport version has 185kW and 370Nm to play with which allows a 6.0-second 0-100km/h sprint time and uses a claimed 6.6-litres of petrol per 100km (uses typical Otto combustion cycle).
The A4 Avant comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights and dynamic rear indicators, leather seats with electric front sport seats, Audi Connect with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.3-inch touchscreen with MMI Navigation plus, DAB+ digital radio, 3-zone climate control.
In the more expensive 2.0 TFSI quattro sport, owners will get all the gear in the base A4 with the addition of 19-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels, sports suspension, 10-speaker 180W Audi sound system, driver seat memory, and folding exterior mirrors.
Buyers can also opt for the Teknik package for an extra $2,100, bringing in Audi’s Virtual Cockpit and Heads-up Display. The S-Line sports package for an extra $5,000 or $3,200 (depending on model), however, adds premium S-Line exterior and interior trim.
Compared to the A4 sedan, the Avant comes with an additional 80-litres of boot space (505 litres in total or 1510 litres with rear seats folded) as a result of that extended canopy, levels practicality that brings it close to some SUVs including Audi’s own Q5.
The A4 Avant’s tailgate is also electric and, as is quickly becoming a must have on hatchbacks, has an automatic release triggered by lightly kicking the rear bumper.
The new A4 Avant comes it at approximately 70kg lighter than the outgoing B8-generation A4 thanks to Audi’s emphasis to using lightweight materials throughout the car’s construction components.
Andrew Doyle, Audi Australia’s Managing Director, said: “It offers class-leading progressive, technology, which has already made the new A4 sedan such an extraordinary standout. As our newest example, the innovative ‘Audi tablet’ rear seat entertainment system establishes a new benchmark for connected infotainment that satisfies the needs of modern families.”
