Over in the UK, Audi has revealed some new variations of the newest addition to their ‘Q’-branded SUV line-up, the Q2. Specifically, it sheds light on how far the Ingolstadt automaker intends to take the small high-rider, now equipping it with a 140kW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol together with quattro all-wheel drive.
No doubt that following this European launch, other markets will soon need to examine whether a more expensive, more powerful, and slightly more desirable Q2 would do well with their customer base, existing or potential.
In Australia, for example, the new Audi crossover can be had with either a 1.4-litre TSI petrol or a 2.0-litre TDI turbodiesel - incidentally, they both produce 110kW at peak, though the torque and fuel economy advantage goes to the latter option, but it’s somewhat tempered by the standard AWD.
Ostensibly, this new 2.0-litre TFSI petrol variant would sit alongside its TDI displacement-equivalent. Audi claims that the new motor will enable impressive acceleration, taking 6.5 seconds to reach 100km/h from rest and will run out of puff at 227kmh/h.
The 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission returns here too, and employs a freewheeling mode when ‘Efficiency’ mode is selected, shutting the engine off once speed drops to below 7km/h. This, along with other fuel saving measures, helps the petrol-powered all-wheel driven Q2 achieve a claimed 5.2-litres/100km frugality figure.
In Britain, this new range-topping Q2 can be had in either S-Line or the limited Edition #1 trim, with the latter’s 19-inch alloys contributing to only slightly reduced fuel economy numbers. LED headlights, an LED interior lighting pack, S line interior and exterior styling cues, 18-inch alloy wheels, C-pillar blades in matt Titanium grey and front sports seats mark out the S line. This adds to the Audi Smartphone Interface, SD card-based MMI Navigation and Audi connect infotainment service package, light and rain sensors and Audi drive select already fitted as standard to all Sport models and above.
Unique to Edition #1 models are the aforementioned larger alloys, an exclusive Quantum grey paint finish, Manhattan grey contrast bumpers and wheel arch trims, as well as side skirts and bumper inserts. Inside, there’s Nappa leather with Amaretto brown stripes and stitches, along with a multi-coloured LED interior lighting pack.
