Audi has pulled the covers off an updated version of the third-generation TTS in both Coupe and Roadster form. Though, because this is just a mind refresh, it lacks the drama or surprise that would colour the launch of something completely new.

Nonetheless, this newer TTS tries its darnedest to bring the sporty two-door up to snuff for 2019. The car is set to receive a market debut in Europe early this year but Australians will have to wait until Q2 before it makes local landfall alongside the TT.

The exterior changes do not leap out upon first glance but needs a deeper examination to appreciate. Those who do will notice the new bumper with horizontal blade element, the full-length front splitter, vertical air inlets, and a wider rear diffuser that better frames the quad exhaust exits.

The TTS’ powertrain, comprising of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has also managed to yield more performance. While the 225kW output for European examples remains level, 20Nm more (400Nm at peak) has been extracted, allowing the all-wheel-driven Coupe to accelerate to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds (4.8 seconds for the Roadster), 0.1 seconds quicker than previously.

For the 2019 model year, Audi is also bringing out the TTS Competition, a limited run variant that adds equipment and cosmetic upgrades that the regular TTS just isn’t allowed to have, such as a fixed rear wing, red painted brake callipers, 20-inch high gloss black wheels (the standard car comes with a set of 18-inch alloys), among others.

Inside, the TTS Competition gives the buyer two choices of leather upholstery: red with contrast stitching in granite grey or ebony with contrast red stitching while the other bits of the interior trim are finished in Slate Grey chrome or glossy Tango Red.
