For years now, Audi’s 2.5-litre TFSI engine has been a winner. The victory streak doesn’t stop in 2016 as Audi’s five-cylinder motor again took its category win at the International Engine of the Year awards.

In fact, this victory cements the engine’s illustrious career in production. It is the seventh year in a row that it has taken the win in the coveted “2-litre to 2.5-litre” category, but also the 12th victory overall.

“The five-cylinder engine has one of the longest traditions within the company and we are continually developing it,” says Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG.

Currently, the engine can be found in the Audi RS 3 Sportback and Audi RS Q3 where it develops a maximum of 274kW and 465Nm, a 20kW/15Nm leap due an enhanced main radiator and optimised fuel pump, allowing the RS Q3 ‘Performance’ to make the century sprint in just 4.4 seconds.

The Audi five-cylinder engine has been with us for around three decades by now, and since the Audi Quattro set the motorsport world ablaze with its all-wheel drive domination in the short-lived but thoroughly excellent Group B series, that unmistakable turbocharged five-cylinder noise has always followed the four-rings.

No doubt Audi will look to further improve the engine before it is slotted into the final production version of the upcoming all-wheel drive high-performance version of the third-generation TT, the TT RS.
