Audi Sport revealed its latest race car back in July at the world-famous Goodwood Festival of Speed, called the R8 LMS GT2, and it’s the most powerful vehicle ever created for the company’s customer racing program.
“With the Audi R8 LMS GT2 we’re opening up a new chapter in our history,” says Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. “Starting in 2020, the GT2 class will enhance the world of GT racing by another valuable new category that immediately got a foothold on three continents. In addition, the race car is ideally suited for track days. In spite of its very specific concept design there are many things it has in common with the production model. They allow us to closely integrate the manufacturing process, which we are very proud of.”
Whether its customers choose to hoon the R8 LMS GT2 around the circuit for a track day or participate it in a GT2-class event such as the one organised by the Stéphane Ratel Organisation (SRO), one thing is for sure – people will notice you.
Replete with a roof air scoop, huge fixed rear wing, pronounced aero, and plenty of neon green accents (including those tyres), the GT2 will turn heads. Behind its snarling maw lined in bright yellowish green and no-prisoners aerodynamics, the R8 GT2 LMS also shares as much as it differs from the road going R8 Spyder. It’s naturally aspirated V10, for example, seems to be unchanged from the V10 Performance, kicking out 470kW.
The ready-to-race R8 LMS GT2 track weapon starts from €338,000 or $543,551 Australian dollars, Audi Sport has already begun deliveries of the first race cars ahead of the 2020 season.
