Audi Sport has been fuming about something and the timing seemed to fit that the frustration would be vented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the form of the R8 LMS GT2, a rather aggressive and racy take on the V10 supercar.
Replete with a roof air scoop, huge fixed rear wing, pronounced aero, and plenty of neon green accents (including those tyres), the car made a furious run up the event’s brief hillclimb course. Angry and loud, clearly it must be signifying something.
Like the existing R8 LMS GT3 and R8 LMS GT4, the just-revealed GT2 is confined to track work and is so named to correspond to the racing series it was designed and engineered to compete in. Specifically, the first GT2-class season of the Stéphane Ratel Organisation (SRO) set to kick off in 2020.
Behind its snarling maw lined in bright yellowish green and no-prisoners aerodynamics, the R8 GT2 LMS also shares as much as it differs from the road going R8. It’s naturally aspirated V10, for example, seems to be unchanged from the V10 Performance, kicking out 470kW.
Audi Sport plan to have their order books filled by their usual clientele of racing teams and gentlemen racers, which are open now. The R8 LMS GT2 has a sticker price of 338,000 Euros, with deliveries set to begin in December in time for those teams to commence pre-season tests and optimisation.
“This sports car with its emotive high-performance V10 engine marks the top end of our customer racing program. The legendary event at Goodwood is the ideal venue for unveiling such a fascinating sports car,” said Oliver Hoffmann, CEO of Audi Sport GmbH.
