German luxury carmaker Audi has released a teaser of its new A6 saloon over the weekend, as it prepares to do battle with segment heavyweights like the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, as well as growing threats in the form of the Volvo S90 and Jaguar XF.

The new A6, when it arrives, is expected to be available in both saloon and estate body styles (the latter called the A6 Avant). Despite saying that the countdown has begun, Audi has not confirmed where or when we’ll see the new A6. This means that we could see the new limousine as soon as the incoming Geneva motor show, or later in the year.

Audi’s new A6 should find motive force from a range of 4- and 6-cylinder forced-induction motors, with both petrol and diesel fuel types. Recent developments from the company suggest that most, if not all of the drivetrains that are set to be fitted to the A6 range will feature the brand’s new 48V mild-hybrid system, further boosting fuel economy.

With the arrival of the new A6 (codename C8), the new mid-size saloon is expected to carry similar design features to those of the larger and posher A8 limousine, while the use of the MQB platform means that we should be likely to see a lot of the advanced driver assistance technology that debuted on the A7 Sportback.
