Audi has revealed a potent version of its A1 compact hatch powered by a new turbocharged and supercharged 1.4-litre petrol engine driving through a seven-speed dual clutch (DSG) transmission.
The ‘dual-charge’ engine is a complex arrangement intended to deliver scintillating performance and optimal fuel consumption. Audi says the supercharger operates from 1,500 rpm to 2,400 rpm, with the turbocharger kicking-in at the latest from 3,500rpm (as the turbo doesn’t operate at lower engine speeds, a larger turbo is used).
With 136kW and 250Nm, the Audi A1 1.4 TFSI sprints from zero to 100km/h in just 6.9 seconds, but is capable of fuel economy as low as 5.9l/100kms and exhaust emissions as low as 139g/km.
The ‘pocket-rocket’ A1 is two-wheel-drive (front wheels) but comes with sport-tuned electronic stability program (ESP) and an electronic limited slip differential. Suspension is McPherson strut front/torsion beam rear and the A1 runs 17-inch alloy wheels.
