Someone told us it rained on the Gold Coast when BMW debuted its new 6 Series Convertible lineup. We were in sunny Melbourne at the time.

Some would suggest well-heeled Gold Coasters will be prime buyers for the updated BMW 6 Series Coupe priced at $194,300 (640i) and $248,300 (650i).

Some would suggest the delayed arrival of the entry-level six-cylinder 640i (not on sale until August) will help sales in Melbourne – just in time for Spring.

Regardless, there’s no doubt the generously-proportioned second generation BMW 6 Series has gained some muscle in its latest guise – it’s longer, lower, wider and boasts some extra ‘squareness’ around the rear end.

Of course the 640i is an addition to the BMW 6 Series lineup and its BMW TwinPower Turbo straight-six engine provides 235kW/450Nm. Zero to 100km/h takes 5.7 seconds and the BMW 640i returns fuel consumption of 7.9l/100kms (European combined cycle).

The range-topping BMW 650i has swapped to BMW’s 4.4-litre TwinPower turbicharged V8 engine which delivers a neck-stretching 300kW/600Nm. Driving the rear wheels via BMW’ superb eight-speed automatic transmission, the 650i sprints from zero to 100km/h in five seconds and its European combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 10.7l/100kms.

Both feature BMW’s usual sumptuous/luxury/high-tech interiorwith Professional navigation, a rear-view camera, park distance control, full-coloure head-up display and Dakota leather seats. BMW650i gains Adaptive Drive, Comfort Seats, a TV function and Surround View camera system and ventilation for the front seats.

BMW says the hardtop 6 Series Coupe models will not arrive until August (probably to coincide with the 640i Convertible).
