BMW Australia Adds V8 Power To Their 5 Series Range

BMW Group Australia will be furnishing their G30 5 Series offering with two more variants, namely, the M550i xDrive Pure and the M550i xDrive, priced from $134,900 and $149,900 respectively.

These two variants will occupy the top spots in the BMW 5er range which was previously occupied by the 540i M-Sport and Luxury Line. But unlike the straight-six turbo engine found in the 540i, the M550i gets the same motor found in the M850i and X5 M50i.

The 4.4-litre V8 aboard the M550i features two twin-scroll turbochargers and develops 390kW and 750Nm. The powerplant is mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox which then channels power on to the black top via its rear-biased xDrive system. This means the M550i will sprint to 100 km/h from rest in just 3.8 seconds. To put that into context, the full-fat M5 is only 0.4 seconds faster.

The $134,900 Pure variant will receive standard equipment such as M Sport brakes, Adaptive M Suspension, M Sport differential, M Aerodynamics package and 20-inch M light alloy wheels. The interior gets sports seats upholstered in Dakota leather, Fine Wood trim, a Harman Kardon surround stereo, BMW Live Cockpit Professional and the Driving Assistant Plus package.

Add $15,000 to the price of a Pure and you get the M550i xDrive, the range topping 5er. That chunk of change gets you additional kit like Active Anti-Roll Stabilisation, Integral Active Steering, Laserlight headlamps, soft close doors and a leather-trimmed instrument panel, although the $3,000 sunroof and $2,000 metallic paintwork are optional on the Pure.

However, both variants will get exterior bits finished in Cerium Grey such as the kidney grille and side-mirror caps.

The $149,900 range-topper is offered with the optional $1,700 Innovations Package which includes the BMW Display Key, Remote Control Parking and Gesture Control. The Indulgence Package gets you rear seat entertainment, massaging front seats and TV for the iDrive system for $7,500.

BMW Australia says that the M550i xDrive Pure will arrive in Q1 2020 while the M550i xDrive will be available come Q2 later that year.
