“We deliver on our promises.”
Earlier this year, the BMW Group promised that it would deliver 100,000 electrified vehicles this year, and when they announced it, it seemed like a truly ambitious plan. It took about 3 years to achieve that milestone (since the launch of the i3 electric hatchback in 2013), and yet somehow, they managed to double that number in just a year. Make no mistake, it’s a huge achievement for the marque, and they’re definitely marking the occasion in a big way.
You may (or may not) be familiar with BMW’s headquarters in Munich, the word-famous “Four-Cylinder” building, designed to look like four engine pistons. So what better way would there be to mark the amazing electrified milestone than to ‘reinvent’ the cylinders?
“We deliver on our promises. This 99-metre-high signal is lighting the way into the era of electro-mobility. Selling 100,000 electrified cars in one year is an important milestone, but this is just the beginning for us. Since the introduction of the BMW i3 2013, we’ve delivered over 200,000 electrified cars to our customers and by 2025, we will offer 25 electrified models to our customers. Our early focus on electro-mobility has made this success possible – and electro-mobility will continue to be my measure for our future success.” — Harald Krüger, Chairman (Board of Management) BMW AG
A lighting installation effectively transforms the cylinders into four upright batteries, replete with their positive and negative terminal symbols, which BMW says signifies the “forward thinking which is a fundamental part of BMW’s DNA.” The projection was lit on the 18th of December, and lasted from 8pm all the way to midnight, with the entire project done in collaboration with the Spielmotor Muenchen cultural organisation, a partnership between the City of Munich and the BMW Group, which dates back to 1979.
