BMW Introduces The New X1 xDrive25e, X2 xDrive25e To Follow

BMW has just unveiled their first electrified car of 2020 and it’s called the X1 xDrive25e. The electrified X1 is part of the marque's target of putting a million electrified cars on the road by the end of 2021. BMW says the X2 xDrive25e will follow later this year.

The plug-in hybrid X1 xDrive25e uses a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that’s mated to a 6-speed Steptronic transmission which sends 92kW and 220Nm to the front axle. The electric motor meanwhile - rated at 70kW and 165Nm – sends power via a single-speed transmission to the rear wheels. The combined system output is 162kW and 385Nm.

The X1 will perform the century sprint from rest in just 6.9 seconds whilst the X2 xDrive25e does the sprint one tenth quicker. The X1 has a top speed of 192km/h but the small ‘coupe SUV’ is faster by 2km/h.

The company says they’ve stuffed the electrified X1 and X2 with the latest in battery cell technology. The battery pack holds a gross energy content of 10kWh, which translates to 57 km of range when measured against the NEDC standard. Top speed in EV mode is 135km/h.

In terms of charging, the lithium-ion battery pack in these SUVs can be filled up in five hours using a conventional household socket and standard-equipment charger. 80 percent charge can be achieved in just 3.8 hours, claimed the brand. They also continue to say that by using a BMW i Wallbox, zero to 100 percent can be done in less than 3.2 hours.

BMW says the electrified duo will also receive “acoustic pedestrian protection as standard. When driving electrically at speeds of up to 19 mph (30km/h), an unmistakable sound designed specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other road users to the approaching car.”

The company says both models will get 17-inch light alloy wheels, dual-zone air-conditioning as well as Sports Seats and LED headlights as standard equipment in the UK market. The X1 xDrive25e will be available in Sport Line, xLine and M Sport trim. BMW says, “virtually all options available on the conventionally powered BMW X1 are available for the plug-in hybrid models.”

The order books for the X1 xDrive25e is open with deliveries slated from March 2020. The X1 is priced from £38,200 or AU$72,632.
