With a name like the Edition Black Shadow, there’s really quite little room BMW left for interpretation. It’s pretty clear what we’re in for here: specifically, it’s an M2 that’s adopted a thoroughly dark theme throughout. Although, apart from making it harder to find in a dimly lit garage, BMW themselves don’t seem to have a great explanation to it existing.
From what we can piece together from the press release that accompanies the announcement, the M2 Edition Black Shadow arises from just how well the car has been received worldwide, prompting BMW to mark the occasion somehow. Apart from what may well be the most badass name given to a rather spontaneous special edition, the Black Shadow does add a number of exterior and interior flourishes unique to it.
For one, it’s body has been given a unique Sapphire Black metallic finish, which is somehow much better than normal metallic black (it’s gotta be?), along with 19-inch forged light alloy wheels in a Y-spoke design in matte black.
Extra exterior touches include the high gloss black treatment given to the M kidney grilles and trim bars, its side mirror housings are done up in carbon fibre, the same goes for its rear diffuser, and its M quad exhaust exists are given black chrome tips. As far as we tell, there are no changes made to the M2’s interior.
The engine itself also remains untouched, however, deriving thrust from the same N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-6 shared with the standard M2, producing 272kW and 465Nm. Before ultimately driving the rear wheels, power is sent through a 7-speed M-DCT dual-clutch automatic and thus able to sprint to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds.
It’s unclear whether BMW Australia will be offering the limited edition Black Shadow to prospective M2 buyers locally. There’s still no word yet about exactly how many examples the Munch automaker intends to make before capping the run to preserve exclusivity, but the first of these are to hit European showrooms starting in April 2018.
