BMW have expanded the new and now off-shot 6 Series (G32), currently represented only by its hatch-like Gran Turismo guise, with a new entry level engine and variant in the 620d. Previously the range began with the petrol powered 630i or, if you preferred a diesel, a 630d would have been the most accessible.

The new BMW 620d Gran Turismo is powered by a familiar B47 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, able to generate 140kW of thrust at 4,000rpm and 400Nm of twist from 1,750rpm. Through variable turbine geometry and Common Rail direct injection among other technologies, the automaker can boast a claimed consumption figure of as little as 4.8-litres/100km.

Lacking the xDrive moniker, the 620d GT defaults to BMW’s assumed position and is therefore rear-wheel driven, with power first being funnelled through an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission - the same unit shared with the rest of the current 6 Series range and indeed many other BMW models. Stand on the accelerator pedal and the 620d is able to reach 100km/h in 7.9 seconds from a standstill.

Despite being an entry-model, BMW has confirmed that it will make available all suspension systems depending on how much the buyer is willing to shell out. Options include the Adaptive Two-Axle Air Suspension, Integral Active Steering, and the Executive Drive system with Active Roll Stabilisation, matching this turbodiesel and in fact the 6 Series GT’s comfort, refinement, and versatility orientation.

Though BMW hasn’t explicitly detailed it, we’d wager that this new entry model will not differ too greatly from the 630i in terms of interior appointments and equipment levels.
