BMW is gearing up to launch the true M performance versions of their newest SUVs (or Sports Activity Vehicle/Coupe, in their own terms), the X3 and its more coupe-like siamese twin, the X4. Obviously, they will be sold as the X3 M and X4 M, are poised to compete against the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV, and Porsche Macan.

Seen here in their production-spec and lightly camouflaged bodies alongside each, the pair have already featured in a more public display over the weekend the the recent DTM race at the Nurburgring, where they both had much of the aerodynamics and driving characteristics honed.

The Munich automaker says both will be powered by a “newly developed” high-revving turbocharged inline-6 petrol engine and, being SUV-derived, will come as standard with an xDrive all-wheel drive system that borrows some tech from the new F90 M5. No figures nor their estimates were revealed, but we’re likely to these new performance models generating upwards of 300kW and mated to the company’s go-to ZF 8-speed automatic.

It’s unclear what BMW means by this, specifically if the powertrain package will be more closely related to the more common B58 block or the more advanced S55 six’er found in the M3 and M2 Competition.

With both the X3 M and X4 M being so closely related, we expect to see little to zero difference in straight line or cornering performance, especially given that they’ll feature the exact same engine and drivetrain combo as well as an identical suspension setup and all-wheel drive system.

BMW also has not disclosed any measures the M Division has taken to lighten the X3 and X4 as they underwent their respective performance conversions. Sure, they might have a slightly weight advantage over the standard variants, but we aren’t willing to assume any major shedding of mass here.

Both new BMW M models will be making their full debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show in October, followed by a global launch rollout taking place throughout Q4 2018 for the X3 M. Fans of the X4 M will have to be a little more patient as the same will likely only occur in Q1 2019.
