Because what’s BMW if it doesn’t explore every niche possible?
Despite claiming to be downsizing by eliminating non-essential products from the current and future portfolios, German luxury marque BMW intends to step into yet another new niche, though admittedly they haven’t gone and created this one themselves. The all-new 2-Series GranCoupe will come to light in November at the Los Angeles motor show, where it’ll sit head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.
By combining an “expressive design” with “dynamic charisma,” and adding a healthy dose of “everyday usability,” BMW feels that the new 2GC (which is what we’re going to call it now) will be an absolute winner among the young, hip (and cashed-up) urbanites that this model will unashamedly go after. With the new car setting “accents in individuality, aesthetics and emotion” in the segment, the 2GC will “create fresh impulses” among car-buyers, they claim.

Most notably, BMW’s confirmed the arrival of the 2GC ahead of that of the 1-Series, with only one line in the press release confirming that the new 1er will debut sometime this year. This suggests that the long-dreaded move of the core 1- and 2-Series models to the front-driven architecture that the 2-Series GranTourer makes use of (and Mini) could be spearheaded by the 2GC rather than the more traditional 1-Series hatch.
Little is known about what’ll motivate the new 2GC, but we’re going to assume that the same range of engines presently available in the current-generation Mini hatchbacks, which means everything from a 75kW three-cylinder petrol all the way up to a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder with 141kW, and maybe an even hotter version of the 4-pot for an eventual M-Sport model.
